Holuhraun

In mid August 2014, a period of volcanic erthquakes began in Bárðabunga, one of Iceland's most powerful volcanoes.wo weeks later, magma reached the surface in an old eruptive fissure which was last active in 1797. A major eruption had begun in the Vatnajökull National Park. It continued for almost six months and came to be Iceland’s largest lava eruption for 230 years. The Lava is extremely rugged and difficult terrain. The lava crust is often thin, fragile and easily damaged. For the safety of visitors, and to protect the new environment, access is only permitted on the waymarked trail from Holuhraun parking lot.
