Gljúfrastofa Visitor Centre
Gljúfrastofa in Ásbyrgi is a visitor centre for Vatnajökull National Park in Jökulsárgljúfur.
Opening hours
January 2nd – April 30th: 11:00–15:00 Monday to Friday
May 1st – June 14th: 10:00–16:00 every day
June 15th – August 31st: 9:00–18:00 every day
September 1st – October 31st: 10:00–16:00 every day
November 1st – December 20th: 11:00–15:00 Monday to Friday
Ásbyrgi Visitor Centre hosts a tourist information centre, an exhibit about the Jökulsárgljúfur canyon area and a small souvenir shop with emphasis on books and local handicraft. It is conveniently located at the mouth of the Ásbyrgi canyon which is also the location of the majority of Ásbyrgi’s and Jökulsárgljúfur’s trailheads. Restrooms are located inside the visitor centre and are accessible during opening hours only.
Ásbyrgi Visitor Centre is a part of the Arctic Coast Way; a 900 km long touring route that threads through the coastline of northern Iceland.
There's a charging station on the parking lot in front the visitor centre for electric and hybrid cars.
Campsite
There is a large campsite in Ásbyrgi with facilities for tents, caravans and mobile homes. There's also a beautiful campsite in Vesturdalur that is only intended for tents and there is neither electricity nor hot water.
